Through step-by-step demonstrations and video tutorials, students will be expected to take notes and work asynchronously (independently, on your own schedule) during provided access to the studio during the week after class demonstrations. This is an in-person class where work will be conducted in a collaborative learning environment on Evergreen's Olympia campus. Namisei tools are ultra sharp and easily re-sharpened. After forging, the tools are made by hand, like the Futatsu Wari and Josei Moku Hanga To. The shin hanga (new prints) movement reflects the syncretism of Western and traditional Japanese cultures. Namisei Moku Hanga To use high quality hard and soft steels joined by an automated factory process (instead of being hand forged, as the steel for Futatsu Wari and Josei Moku Hanga To blades are). Assignments are supportive of the beginner to advanced student. Yet, the early 20th century was a period in which Japanese arts in general underwent profound transformations with a growing familiarity with modern European art movements and modernism was certainly felt in the realm of printmaking. In this intensive weekend summer course, traditional methods of Eastern printmaking will be explored through a Western lens. Subject matter will be focus on the natural and organic, and the technical process will be influenced by the historical practices of Japanese printmaking. Through investigation of printing techniques dating back to the Edo period (1603-1868) for the style known as Ukiyo-e, this class will explore and demonstrate a close appreciation of nature in the practice of art-making. Art and nature come together in this hands-on exploration of this Japanese style of woodblock printing, called Mokuhanga. ![]()
